Congratulations! 🎉 You have a smart meter! But what steps are necessary to switch your tariff to a dynamic electricity tariff? In this guide, you'll find everything you need to know.

Step 1: Is Your Meter Really a Smart Meter?

Not every digital electricity meter is a smart meter! To switch to a dynamic tariff, your meter must be a modern measuring device with a Smart Meter Gateway. This communication unit ensures the secure transmission of your consumption data and enables hourly billing based on current electricity market prices.

Networks of the Smart Meter Gateway:

  • LMN (Local Metrological Network): Connects to the digital electricity meter to collect consumption data.
  • WAN (Wide Area Network): Securely transmits data via mobile network to the metering point operator, grid operator, and electricity supplier.
  • Smart Home: Connects to smart home devices for optimized control.

To ensure data protection & security, the Smart Meter Gateway must be certified by the BSI (Federal Office for Information Security). All gateways certified by the BSI can be found here.

How to Identify a Smart Meter:

With the following checklist, you can quickly check whether you have a smart meter that allows you to use our dynamic tariff.

What Happens After the Meter Installation?

📌 Important: Was your meter recently replaced? If so, it may take a few weeks for your new meter to be registered with the grid operator and for us to receive the relevant data.

Step 2: Switching to the RLM Profile

A smart meter alone is not enough! Your meter profile must be switched to RLM (Registered Load Measurement) so that we can receive your consumption data at regular intervals and bill you accurately on an hourly basis.

Since December 1, 2024, our right to choose the forecast basis has been eliminated – the grid operator must automatically reallocate smart meter consumption points. However, as the implementation remains unclear, we will proactively apply for the switch on your behalf.

📌 Important: The switch to RLM can only take place at the beginning of a month and must be requested from the grid operator at least four weeks in advance.

Example:

  • Application submitted on January 10, 2025 → Switch takes effect at the earliest on February 1, 2025.
  • If the grid operator does not approve the request, delays may occur.

Step 3: Receiving Load Profile Data

After successfully switching to the RLM profile, we will receive your daily consumption data from the grid operator. If any issues arise, we will proactively coordinate with the relevant market partners to resolve them.

Step 4: All Requirements Met

Great! 🙌 Since all technical requirements are now fulfilled, our operations team will switch your tariff to "dynamic" within a few weeks.

Step 5: Tariff Change – No More Deposit Payments!

Once your tariff has been switched, you will receive a confirmation email from our support team. With the transition to the dynamic tariff, your billing will also change:

✅ A final invoice for the SimplyFair tariff will be issued.

✅ Your monthly deposit payment will be set to €0.

Step 6: Your Dynamic Tariff is Active! 🎉

From now on, your electricity consumption will be billed at the daily updated, hourly market price. The Day-Ahead spot market price is determined daily on the exchange for the following 24 hours.

You no longer have to pay a fixed monthly deposit payment. Instead, you will receive a transparent monthly bill based on your actual consumption. Your bill will include the basic price, your average electricity price per kilowatt-hour, and your total electricity consumption for the billing month.

🔎 Still don’t have a smart meter? No problem! We can assist with the installation and already have partnerships with many grid operators in Germany. Find out here if your grid area is included.
