Ostrom drives the green energy transition by making renewable energy more accessible and inclusive. By creating a green energy management platform, they help consumers switch, track and reduce their electricity consumption effortlessly.
This way, Ostrom upends all the headaches of the German energy industry and finally says goodbye to 12 or 24-month lock-ins, non-existent customer service, and outdated paper or fax-based backend processes.
Ostrom offers only one clear, transparent tariff with monthly cancellation, and end-to-end English & German support, all from website to live customer care. By using modern tech, Ostrom keeps things lean and simple, allowing them to focus on their customer’s needs and stay 100% green—without needing to markup tariffs as other providers do. In Germany, common energy contracts aim to lure customers with a large upfront discount but follow with a long lock-in period. Traditional utilities follow a lock-and-forget incentive, hoping to extend the contract by another 1-2 years automatically. By offering users simplicity and flexibility instead, Ostrom aims to finally accelerate the green energy transition.
The company has raised $10 million in a Series A round from US investors Adjacent and Union Square Ventures in December 2022 and closed an additional $8 million in funding from SE Ventures in September 2023. Ostrom so far has raised over $23 million in total to further roll out smart meter & dynamic pricing tariffs, smart EV charging, smart heat pump optimization, and solar PV integrations in Germany.
The idea originated from Matthias while consulting energy companies at Oliver Wyman. In January 2021, realizing how highly bureaucratic and outdated processes were, for example, 90% offline marketing budgets or extremely manual backend processes, he decided to move on and create a better energy utility for Germany.
Karl joined several weeks later to support user acquisition and UX. After experiencing several B2C startups and joining the Berlin cohort of Entrepreneur First, he was striving to found his own startup.
After development, they released the early MVP in May 2021. Within only a few months, Ostrom still provides for several customers while the team continues to refine its product and operations.
