At least 10 percent more greenhouse gas savings are agreed on

Last week, the European Union negotiated tighter climate targets. CO2 emissions in EU member states are to fall more sharply, but the exact implementation is still unclear. Specifically, greenhouse gases are to be at least 55 percent lower in 2030 than in 1990, which is 10 percent more reduction than the previously agreed 45 percent. The biggest challenge here is that some EU countries have so far been heavily dependent on coal. Billions in aid have been agreed for these countries, and aid from the Corona reconstruction program has been dedicated to the expansion of renewable energies.

Critics fear trickery

Climate activists say the agreed targets are too low to tackle the climate crisis. Moreover, the 55% target is not just a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, because the expansion of natural CO2 storage facilities can be included in the calculation. On the one hand, this probably reduces actual emissions less, and on the other, such so-called sinks are considered unsafe.

In addition, countries such as France, the Czech Republic and Hungary continue to rely on nuclear power. No common line has yet been found on this in the climate targets that have now been agreed on. In addition, the final declaration explicitly mentions gas as a bridging technology.

End consumers must continue to actively opt for green electricity.

It is clear that despite stricter climate targets, the energy transition remains a sham in some areas. week. Conventional power plants using fossil fuels such as gas will continue to exist for many years to come, and nuclear energy is far from being off the table outside of Germany. The end customer must still actively opt for genuine green power. This is the only way to increase the pressure on energy producers to push ahead with the expansion of renewable energies.
